Platform overview

MetaMask is a self-custodial browser extension and mobile wallet built around account management and signing for web applications. It is closely associated with EVM dapps, while its multichain accounts can also group separate Solana and Bitcoin addresses under one account name.

Recovery phrase control, with a local password

A standard MetaMask wallet is derived from a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. The phrase restores accounts on another device; the local password only unlocks the wallet on the current device. Control of the relevant phrase or account private key controls the assets, and there is no centralized reset for a lost phrase.

Wallets created through Google, Apple or Telegram login use encrypted recovery-phrase pieces and depend on the selected login plus the MetaMask password unless the phrase has been separately revealed and backed up. Both models leave account control and recovery arrangements with the user rather than an exchange custodian.

One account label, distinct network addresses

MetaMask's historical core is Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks, including layer-2 and sidechain-style networks. The selected network determines the assets, gas token and dapp transaction a user sees or signs.

Native Solana and Bitcoin support adds separate addresses to the same multichain account label; an EVM address does not become a valid Bitcoin or Solana address. Bitcoin receiving is limited to MetaMask's Native SegWit derivation path, so funds from a different derivation path may need import or another compatible wallet.

Dapp connections and approvals are separate permissions

Connecting a dapp identifies an account to a site and lets it request actions, but it does not itself move funds. MetaMask still asks the user to approve a transaction or signature. A message signature can authenticate or attest to content without an on-chain transaction, while a transaction can send assets, invoke a contract or authorize a contract call.

Token approvals are a distinct EVM permission. An approved spender may be able to move up to the approved token amount later, which is unlike signing one immediate transfer and can persist after the original dapp interaction. MetaMask is convenient for recurring browser dapp use because it keeps the account connection nearby, but the account, network, request and any allowance remain separate choices to inspect.

EVM-first dapp access with multichain extensions

Rabby is a close alternative for an EVM-focused browser-wallet user, particularly around transaction simulation and network handling. MetaMask offers a wider account view here by natively grouping EVM, Solana and Bitcoin addresses and by supporting permissioned Snap add-ons for third-party integrations or custom account behavior.

Phantom is the more Solana-centered comparison. MetaMask can manage native Solana assets beside EVM and Bitcoin accounts, but its core role remains multichain account management and web-application signing. A supported hardware wallet can add physical signing approval while MetaMask continues to present the account and dapp request.
