Platform overview
Gnosis Pay connects a self-custodial Gnosis Pay Safe smart wallet to a Visa debit card. It is built for stablecoin spending: purchases draw from the Safe rather than from a separately loaded, provider-held prepaid balance.
The Safe is the card’s spending balance
The wallet and card are deliberately the same pool of funds. A cardholder keeps control of assets in the Gnosis Pay Safe until a payment spends them, while the Visa card carries that payment to an online, in-store or in-app merchant. This differs from a crypto prepaid card that first moves money into a card-program account.
Gnosis Pay describes the route as Safe to the Gnosis Pay network to Visa to the merchant, with card payments recorded onchain. Published payment-side assets include EURe, GBPe and USDCe. Moving crypto out of the Safe remains a separate onchain transfer that can require gas; ordinary card transactions do not carry gas fees.
Stablecoin payments through Visa
The card is a debit card, not a credit facility. Gnosis Pay publishes a 1:1 stablecoin relationship for its card-currency example, while Visa applies its exchange rate when a purchase needs currency conversion. Gnosis Pay says it does not add a purchase or conversion fee, though its terms include replacement charges and an ATM fair-use allowance followed by fees for further withdrawals.
Card limits are separate from the total wallet balance: daily and single-purchase limits sit alongside daily and single-withdrawal ATM limits. A physical card can also be added to Apple Pay in the published EEA, Swiss, Gibraltar, UK and Brazilian issuance markets, without disabling the physical card.
Visa acceptance does not remove programme limits
Issuance is limited to legal residents in Gnosis Pay’s published European and Latin American markets, with a waitlist for places still being added. Even for an eligible holder, country restrictions and card-program limits still apply at the point of payment.
Automated fuel dispensers, car-rental agencies, betting and gambling are among the published merchant-category exceptions. Supported currencies, card limits, location restrictions and merchant-category limits mean the card cannot turn every Safe balance into card spending or cash.
