Account registration, Identity verification, Eligible jurisdiction
A centralized crypto exchange with an OTC desk and account verification requirements.
Kraken is a long-running centralized crypto platform whose Kraken app and Kraken Pro split gives it a notably trading-led identity, with professional spot tools, margin, perpetuals, and a NinjaTrader-linked U.S. futures route alongside retail buying.
The Kraken app supports simpler crypto activity and recurring buys, while Kraken Pro is the active-trading interface for crypto, stocks, and futures. Pro adds advanced charts, granular order controls, APIs, and access to more than 1,400 advertised crypto pairs.
Kraken+ can offer zero-fee retail trading within monthly volume limits, but it excludes Kraken Pro; spreads and payment-processing fees can still apply. The subscription is not a substitute for Pro’s fee and order-control model.
Eligible Pro customers can use spot margin to trade the underlying asset with eligible crypto collateral, including selected assets at up to 10x leverage. This differs from futures: margin involves borrowing, opening and four-hour rollover charges, and possible liquidation when collateral no longer supports a position.
Kraken Pro also offers perpetual futures with position controls and liquidation-level information. In the United States, the group’s affiliated NinjaTrader companies and Kraken Derivatives US provide the regulated futures brokerage connection.
Kraken staking lets customers delegate the validator role for supported proof-of-stake assets and receive weekly rewards after any bonding period. Displayed estimates are before Kraken’s commission, while available assets, bonding periods, and reward rates differ by network.
Broader Earn features are not a universal account property: certain opt-in rewards are unavailable in the United States, EEA, and some other regions.
Kraken uses separate entities and permissions for regional products. Derivatives can be offered through different entities in the EEA, United Kingdom, and United States, while Kraken Securities is a separate U.S. securities brokerage from its digital-asset services.
That structure means a customer cannot infer access to margin, futures, securities, or Earn features from the Kraken brand alone; the local account determines the actual product set.
Coinbase is the close U.S.-oriented alternative for simple purchases, Coinbase Advanced, USDC rewards, and eligible regulated futures. Kraken’s specific distinction is its Pro-led combination of spot-margin collateral, perpetual futures, and the NinjaTrader-linked U.S. futures route.
