Platform overview

Koinly is a crypto accounting and tax workflow that centralizes wallet, blockchain and exchange activity, then supports transaction review before the record is used for reports or sent to conventional accounting software.

Imported activity becomes the shared working record

Koinly imports activity through API connections and CSV files from blockchains, wallets and exchanges. Its stated 900-plus integrations indicate possible source breadth, not assurance that every history range or transaction type imports cleanly. CSV remains a fallback, but needs checks for date range, duplicates, precision, columns and transfers represented on both sides.

The workflow is transaction-first: connect or upload, centralize the record, review it, then apply mapping or rules. A single view reduces fragmented manual handling, but its quality is bounded by the completeness and labeling quality of the underlying sources.

Transfer detection and rules create a review queue, not automatic truth

Automatic error reconciliation, transfer detection, transaction mapping and rules help distinguish a movement between owned accounts from an apparent disposal and acquisition. An unmatched transfer, missing deposit, fee, wrapped asset, DeFi event, manual row or incorrect timestamp can still alter the bookkeeping and tax result if it is accepted without correction.

Rules work best for documented repeatable patterns. A rule that fits one counterparty or protocol interaction should not be assumed to classify every similarly named transaction. The working record needs clear ownership of source coverage, account mapping, exceptions and approval before any wider ledger handoff.

Koinly vs Cryptio: selected accounting sync and institutional scope

One Koinly account can connect to either Xero or QuickBooks at a time. After the accounting connection and chart-of-accounts setup, a user can sync all transactions or choose specific transactions; selective sync keeps unreviewed or out-of-scope activity out of the destination ledger. In Xero, synced journals appear as drafts until posted; QuickBooks exposes synced journal entries through the Journal Report.

Koinly fits individuals, tax professionals and businesses that need a crypto-specific cleanup and reporting layer alongside one conventional-accounting destination. Cryptio is the contrasting institutional option where the controlling requirement is an auditable subledger, reconciled close and exports across a broader ERP, banking and risk perimeter. Neither destination sync independently reconciles the crypto-source record.
