Platform overview

CoinPayments is a crypto payment processor for merchants that combines checkout collection, invoicing, integrations and asset operations. A business can use a hosted payment tool for a simple sale or connect payment events to a customized store, then hold, move, convert or, where supported, pay out the received assets.

Three ways to present an API checkout

API-led checkout begins with invoice creation. A merchant can send the buyer to full CoinPayments checkout, keep currency selection on its own site before redirecting the buyer, or render the amount, address, QR code and payment-progress information in its own payment page.

All three options use the same invoice and webhook foundation. The choice changes how much of the customer-facing payment page the merchant runs, while CoinPayments continues to send payment and confirmation events back to the order system.

Invoices for a cart, a service sale or a fixed-price button

CoinPayments can lock an exchange rate when an invoice is created, connecting the customer's crypto amount to the billed amount before payment. Dashboard invoicing can send an email, create a payment link, save a draft or create a PDF, which gives a service business a payment request without an API build.

Payment buttons address fixed-price goods and donations without cart functions. Pre-built plugins connect supported ecommerce platforms, while custom APIs are for stores that need a branded or specialized checkout.

From collection to balances, conversions and withdrawals

The API also manages deposit addresses, balances, withdrawals, conversions, transaction progress and confirmations. A merchant can therefore use CoinPayments for more than pass-through checkout: received crypto can enter a provider-managed balance before the business moves funds or converts supported assets.

Crypto-to-fiat bank payout is available where supported, and card-based payment options come through partners. Fiat settlement, card payments and settlement timing are not unconditional account features; the supporting partner, location and payout terms are part of the merchant's choice.

Shared merchant controls and provider-operated custody

Delegated multi-user access and role-based controls let a merchant share an account without giving every employee the same authority over payments, balances or withdrawals. CoinPayments also describes transaction risk screening before settlement and early detection of incoming deposits before blockchain confirmation.

Its enterprise custody uses multi-signature custody, and its payment infrastructure describes MPC-backed signing without a private key stored or exposed in full in one place. These are provider-operated arrangements, not a self-hosted wallet system operated by the merchant. Withdrawal batching can also combine funds from multiple callback addresses into one blockchain transaction, targeting network-fee overhead for businesses making many outgoing transfers.

Managed checkout beside fiat-first and self-hosted options

BitPay is a close managed alternative for merchants seeking hosted checkout, plugins, APIs and emailed invoices with a model centered on local-currency conversion and bank settlement. CoinPayments is more relevant to a business that wants provider-managed digital-asset balances, withdrawal operations and conversions after a sale.

BTCPay Server is the different choice for a merchant that wants self-hosted, open-source processing and direct peer-to-peer payments. CoinPayments trades that self-hosted operation for managed accounts, hosted checkout options and optional third-party fiat or card arrangements.
