Coinbase is a publicly traded U.S. crypto company whose retail exchange, institutional custody business, and U.S. futures operation give it a broader domestic account-based position than a simple buy-and-hold app.

Retail purchases and Coinbase Advanced

The standard account is designed for buying, selling, converting, transferring, and holding crypto. Coinbase Advanced serves the same account holder with real-time order books, TradingView charts, indicators, watchlists, APIs, and market, limit, and stop-limit orders.

The two interfaces use different pricing approaches. Retail exchange prices can include a spread, while Advanced lets active traders work an order against the order book under volume- and balance-based fee tiers.

USDC rewards and network staking

Eligible customers can receive USDC rewards from an account balance and stake supported assets such as ETH, ADA, SOL, ATOM, and XTZ. Coinbase takes a commission from network rewards rather than requiring the customer to operate a validator.

Staked assets cannot be sold or transferred until the relevant network completes unstaking. Rates, assets, and eligibility vary by asset and region, so neither a USDC reward rate nor staking access is universal across Coinbase accounts.

U.S. futures alongside spot markets

Eligible retail customers can access derivatives through Coinbase Advanced, while Coinbase Derivatives operates a CFTC-registered U.S. futures market. Its lineup includes crypto and commodity futures, U.S. perpetual-style futures, and equity-index futures.

The futures brokerage relationship runs through Coinbase Financial Markets, separately from spot crypto trading. That gives Coinbase a domestic futures route that differs from an offshore perpetuals catalogue, although contracts and access remain product- and jurisdiction-specific.

Prime, custody, and institutional execution

Coinbase Prime combines execution, financing, futures, custody, and staking for institutions. Its Smart Order Router can aggregate liquidity from connected exchanges, OTC desks, and professional market makers, while Prime’s agency-only execution and reporting address institutional trading needs.

Coinbase Custody Trust Company supplies Prime custody as a New York limited-purpose trust company and qualified custodian. Prime can also support unified risk and cross-margining across spot and derivatives for eligible institutions.

Account custody and Base App

Trading balances are held in a Coinbase account, making it easy to move between supported exchange products and external transfers without signing every order from a personal wallet. That is exchange custody, not direct control of the keys.

Coinbase’s Base App branding also covers self-custody and onchain products. Those products are distinct from leaving assets in the custodial exchange account.

How it differs from Kraken

Kraken is a close custodial alternative with a simple app, a professional order-book interface, staking, and derivatives where locally available. Coinbase’s distinguishing range combines Coinbase Advanced, a U.S. futures exchange, and Prime’s qualified-custody and institutional execution business.
