Platform overview
BSC, also called BNB Smart Chain, is an EVM-compatible public blockchain for smart contracts, tokens, and application transactions. BNB pays transaction fees and is the asset delegated into its validator system, tying everyday use and proof-of-staked-authority participation to the same token.
EVM compatibility keeps Solidity applications close to familiar tools
Ethereum-style contracts and much of the Ethereum development stack can run on BSC, while its JSON-RPC interface is compatible with Geth. Existing EVM wallets, libraries, and operational tools can usually connect after a network change, making BSC a direct route for a Solidity application that does not want to redesign around a different program and account model.
Compatibility does not make BSC interchangeable with Ethereum. Contracts, assets, liquidity, and gas payments remain BSC-specific. A user holding an ERC-20-style asset on BSC still needs BNB in that wallet to submit a BSC transaction.
BNB delegation elects a limited validator set
BSC uses Proof of Staked Authority. Holders bond and delegate BNB to validator candidates, and staking rank helps determine which candidates become active validators. The documented active set has 45 validators; 18 Cabinet validators and 3 Candidates form the 21-validator consensus set for each epoch.
That bounded design connects BNB delegation directly to block-production eligibility and short block times, but it is more limited than consensus participation spread across a much larger validator population. Validators receive BNB transaction-fee rewards, set a commission, and share the remainder with delegators according to stake.
Fast Finality has a fallback condition
BSC documents roughly 0.45-second mainnet blocks and Fast Finality in about two blocks when enough validator votes are present. When those votes are insufficient, the chain falls back to probabilistic finality, where additional confirmations increase confidence. Applications handling irreversible actions need the appropriate finality state rather than relying only on a recently seen block.
Validator operators must keep infrastructure online and take part in consensus. PoSA penalties cover double signing, malicious fast-finality votes, and substantial downtime, with slashing and temporary jailing under defined offenses. Delegators support a candidate and may share rewards, but they do not take on the operator’s role.
Solana favors a different execution and integration choice
Solana is the close base-network contrast for a team considering account-aware parallel execution. BSC prioritizes EVM portability, Geth-compatible RPC, and familiar Solidity integration, while Solana requires a program-and-account approach. BSC is the lower-friction choice when existing EVM contracts and tooling are the material constraint.
