Platform overview
Filecoin is a storage-market network in which a client makes a time-bounded storage deal with a selected provider. It is not enough to create an IPFS content identifier: durable storage requires a provider, a deal workflow or a service that performs those steps.
A storage deal makes retention economically accountable
A provider accepts the client’s data, seals it into a sector and proves over the deal term that the committed data remains stored. Clients pay for accepted capacity, while providers stake collateral and can face protocol penalties for failing required proofs; the incentive is to preserve the agreed data during the agreement, not every CID indefinitely without a deal.
Content is commonly handled through a CID, which identifies a content representation rather than a mutable server location. Changing the bytes produces a new identifier, so the client must retain or publish the intended CID and cannot infer a Filecoin commitment simply from an IPFS upload or pin.
Duration, replication and retrieval need active management
A deal has a defined duration, not an automatic permanent-retention promise. A client that needs continuing storage must monitor it, consider redundancy across providers, and renew or replace storage before relevant commitments expire.
Retrieval is separate from deal creation. A retriever starts with a CID, locates an available provider or routing path and fetches the data; reachability and serving behavior affect the result. Retrieval tooling may return CAR-formatted content, which an application may need to unpack rather than treat as an ordinary filesystem download.
Filecoin trades permanence for client-controlled lifecycle
Filecoin fits a deployment that needs negotiated, verifiable storage commitments and can manage provider selection, duration, replication, renewal and retrieval routing. It is less appropriate for an upload-once workflow that assumes an immutable public location will remain available without lifecycle work.
Arweave is the close contrast: its upload model uses an upfront-funded, intended-permanent publication transaction, while Filecoin gives the client provider-specific deals that can be selected, replicated, renewed and replaced. The choice is lifecycle control and recurring management versus an immutable publication path.
