Platform overview

Athena Bitcoin operates Athena-branded Bitcoin ATMs across the United States, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia, El Salvador and Mexico. The network supports cash purchases broadly and a cash-out path at a smaller group of sell-capable machines.

A cash purchase is sent to a wallet destination

A buyer chooses a cash range, enters a mobile number and completes an SMS-code step before scanning a wallet receive QR code, entering a compatible address or creating a paper wallet. The address ties the cash insertion to a blockchain destination; it does not create a conventional ATM account balance. Athena’s purchase instructions are Bitcoin-focused and state that its machines do not accept debit or credit cards.

A personal wallet leaves the customer responsible for its private keys or recovery material. A paper wallet lets someone complete a purchase without arriving with an address, but its printed private key must later be imported or swept into a compatible wallet. Athena says it does not store that key, making safe handling of the printout part of the customer’s responsibility.

Selling crypto requires confirmation before redemption

At a sell-capable machine, the customer selects Withdraw Cash, chooses an asset and amount, then receives an Athena address and the exact crypto amount to send. The customer sends that amount from a wallet to the kiosk address. Only after the required network confirmation does Athena send a text that allows a return with a redemption code for cash.

Select machines support BTC, LTC, ETH and BCH sales for cash. The route carries Athena’s stated 5% operator fee as well as the network fee used by the sender. An insufficient sent amount or network fee can delay redemption, and the machine must have cash on hand as well as sell capability.

Machine type and location determine the usable service

A phone number and SMS code are part of the published flows, and a machine can request government identification. Services can also vary with the customer’s state, location and transaction conditions. A location on the map therefore does not establish that it offers every asset, buy and sell option or current cash availability.

Bitcoin Depot is the closest contrast: both use retail locations for cash-to-wallet purchases, but Bitcoin Depot’s ATM position centres on buying while Athena separately documents cash redemption at select machines.
