Platform overview
Aragon OSx lets an organization create an onchain DAO account that can hold assets, manage permissions, install plugins, and carry out approved actions. The DAO contract is both the organization’s identity and its treasury account, so decisions can reach more than a separate voting page.
Plugins receive only the authority they need
Permissions specify which addresses, contracts, or plugins may take particular actions for the DAO. Plugins add roles such as voting, membership, treasury management, or integrations, and their permissions determine what they can actually do.
A voting plugin needs the DAO’s execute permission to turn a successful vote into DAO actions. Other plugins can be restricted to narrower powers, allowing an organization to combine token voting, address-based voting, multisig approval, conviction voting, or optimistic governance without giving every component broad treasury control.
TokenVoting snapshots power before a proposal
Aragon’s TokenVoting plugin creates proposals with metadata, an ordered action list, voting dates, and vote settings. It uses voting power from the block before proposal creation, preventing balances acquired later from increasing a voter’s influence in that proposal.
The plugin supports ERC20Votes tokens and delegated voting power. A proposal must meet its configured support, participation, and approval thresholds; it may become executable after voting ends or earlier when the outcome is mathematically certain.
Passed proposals act through the DAO account
A successful proposal passes its action list to the DAO or a designated executor, and an authorized caller triggers it. That permission is often open to any address, so execution need not wait for the proposer or a chosen voter to be online.
One proposal can run several actions in order, including asset transfers, settings changes, plugin installation or removal, and calls to external contracts. Required action failures revert the batch unless an action is deliberately allowed to fail. Snapshot is more focused on configurable voting spaces; Aragon begins with the treasury-holding DAO account and permissioned plugins that can carry an approved decision through to its actions.
